But for us Malague\u00f1os, it\u2019s not just about the caffeine; coffee is the perfect excuse to pause, connect, and enjoy the moment.<br \/>\nWe love sitting out on a sunny terrace, feeling the warmth on our skin while lingering over a good chat and a well-poured cafelito.<br \/>\nLike true Spaniards, our open and sociable nature makes sharing a coffee feel almost like a sacred ritual. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>M\u00e1laga is a city with a coffee tradition that\u2019s truly unique in Spain.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you&#8217;re visiting and ask for a &#8220;cappuccino&#8221; or a simple &#8220;espresso,&#8221; you might be in for a surprise.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you might get a confused look from the waiter.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s because here in M\u00e1laga, coffee is ordered in a very particular way \u2014 using a system you won\u2019t find anywhere else in Spain.<br \/>\nIn this article, we\u2019ll explain the origin of this local tradition and break down the different types of coffee you can order like a true local. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The History of Coffee in M\u00e1laga and its unique proportion system<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"112\" data-end=\"493\">The way coffee is ordered in M\u00e1laga dates back to the post-war period, a time when coffee was scarce, hard to get, and very expensive.<br data-start=\"246\" data-end=\"249\" \/>It was <strong data-start=\"256\" data-end=\"281\">Don Jos\u00e9 Prado Crespo<\/strong>, owner of the historic <strong data-start=\"305\" data-end=\"321\">Caf\u00e9 Central<\/strong> \u2014 located in the heart of M\u00e1laga at Plaza de la Constituci\u00f3n \u2014 who came up with a simple and practical way to serve coffee based on how much each customer actually wanted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"495\" data-end=\"849\">Back then, customers would ask for &#8220;just a finger of coffee,&#8221; but many would send it back \u2014 either because it was too much or too little. In fact, Caf\u00e9 Central proudly displayed a sign listing all the options \u2014 including a cheeky tenth one: <em data-start=\"1041\" data-end=\"1064\">&#8220;Don\u2019t serve me any,&#8221;<\/em> for those who didn\u2019t want coffee at all.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Types of coffee in Malaga and how to order them correctly<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"117\" data-end=\"383\">This coffee-ordering tradition is deeply rooted in M\u00e1laga, and even though Caf\u00e9 Central has since closed its doors, the system remains very much alive.<br data-start=\"268\" data-end=\"271\" \/>Here are the <strong data-start=\"284\" data-end=\"321\">10 ways to order coffee in M\u00e1laga<\/strong>, along with their rough equivalents in the rest of Andalusia:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"385\" data-end=\"1498\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"385\" data-end=\"473\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"387\" data-end=\"473\"><strong data-start=\"387\" data-end=\"395\">Solo<\/strong> \u2013 A straight espresso, no milk. The same term is used throughout Andalusia.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"474\" data-end=\"613\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"476\" data-end=\"613\"><strong data-start=\"476\" data-end=\"485\">Largo<\/strong> \u2013 Almost like an espresso, but with a small dash of milk (around 10%). Elsewhere, this might be ordered as a &#8220;cortado largo.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"614\" data-end=\"757\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"616\" data-end=\"757\"><strong data-start=\"616\" data-end=\"630\">Semi-largo<\/strong> \u2013 Similar to the largo, but with a bit more milk: 80% coffee and 20% milk. This is close to what\u2019s usually called a cortado.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"758\" data-end=\"932\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"760\" data-end=\"932\"><strong data-start=\"760\" data-end=\"774\">Solo corto<\/strong> \u2013 In M\u00e1laga, this means about half coffee, half milk, though with slightly more coffee.
