\nLike true Spaniards, our open and sociable nature makes sharing a coffee feel almost like a sacred ritual. <\/span><\/p>\n

M\u00e1laga is a city with a coffee tradition that\u2019s truly unique in Spain.<\/strong><\/span> If you’re visiting and ask for a “cappuccino” or a simple “espresso,” you might be in for a surprise.<\/span>you might get a confused look from the waiter.
\nThat\u2019s because here in M\u00e1laga, coffee is ordered in a very particular way \u2014 using a system you won\u2019t find anywhere else in Spain.
\nIn this article, we\u2019ll explain the origin of this local tradition and break down the different types of coffee you can order like a true local. <\/span><\/p>\n

The History of Coffee in M\u00e1laga and its unique proportion system<\/b><\/h2>\n

The way coffee is ordered in M\u00e1laga dates back to the post-war period, a time when coffee was scarce, hard to get, and very expensive.
It was Don Jos\u00e9 Prado Crespo<\/strong>, owner of the historic Caf\u00e9 Central<\/strong> \u2014 located in the heart of M\u00e1laga at Plaza de la Constituci\u00f3n \u2014 who came up with a simple and practical way to serve coffee based on how much each customer actually wanted.<\/p>\n

Back then, customers would ask for “just a finger of coffee,” but many would send it back \u2014 either because it was too much or too little. In M\u00e1laga, they say no two people take their coffee the same way, so to avoid confusion and waste, Prado Crespo created a system with nine different ways to order coffee<\/strong>, depending on the ratio of coffee to milk.<\/p>\n

Not only did this solve the problem, but it also became a beloved local tradition<\/strong>. In fact, Caf\u00e9 Central proudly displayed a sign listing all the options \u2014 including a cheeky tenth one: “Don\u2019t serve me any,”<\/em> for those who didn\u2019t want coffee at all.<\/p>\n

Types of coffee in Malaga and how to order them correctly<\/b><\/h2>\n

This coffee-ordering tradition is deeply rooted in M\u00e1laga, and even though Caf\u00e9 Central has since closed its doors, the system remains very much alive.
Here are the 10 ways to order coffee in M\u00e1laga<\/strong>, along with their rough equivalents in the rest of Andalusia:<\/p>\n

    Solo<\/strong> \u2013 A straight espresso, no milk. The same term is used throughout Andalusia.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Largo<\/strong> \u2013 Almost like an espresso, but with a small dash of milk (around 10%). Elsewhere, this might be ordered as a “cortado largo.”<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Semi-largo<\/strong> \u2013 Similar to the largo, but with a bit more milk: 80% coffee and 20% milk. This is close to what\u2019s usually called a cortado.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Solo corto<\/strong> \u2013 In M\u00e1laga, this means about half coffee, half milk, though with slightly more coffee. Outside the city, you might just ask for a stronger caf\u00e9 con leche.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Mitad<\/strong> \u2013 The classic half-and-half: 50% coffee, 50% milk.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Entrecorto<\/strong> \u2013 A middle ground between mitad and corto, with just a touch more milk than mitad.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Corto<\/strong> \u2013 Roughly 70% milk and 30% coffee. Elsewhere, you can ask for a “caf\u00e9 con leche corto de caf\u00e9.”<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Sombra<\/strong> \u2013 Just a “finger” of coffee and the rest milk. In other Andalusian regions, it\u2019s often called a very light caf\u00e9 con leche.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Nube<\/strong> \u2013 Literally “cloud”: just a drop of coffee in mostly milk.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    No me lo pongas<\/strong> \u2013 The humorous option: \u201cDon\u2019t serve me anything at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
